McDonald’s Australia Reunites Its Original Characters ‘Down Under’ in a New Campaign

McDonald’s Australia and DDB Sydney have revived four iconic McDonaldland characters—Birdie, Hamburglar, Officer Big Mac, and Grimace, for the new summer campaign, ‘Squad Down Under.’

Centered on the ‘Macca’s run?’ summer platform, the campaign features 60, 30, 15, and 6-second ads airing on TV, online, and social media. It promotes a limited-time ‘Squad Down Under Bundle for 4’ meal, including two McOz burgers, two classic burgers, four medium Vegemite Shaker Fries, four drinks, and a bonus bucket hat.

Set to Run DMC’s ‘It’s Like That,’ the ads capture the feel-good vibes of a summer road trip, showing the iconic characters cruising to Macca’s like a group of Aussie mates planning a cheeky run via group chat.

McDonald’s Marketing Director, Amanda Nakad commented: “There’s so much love and nostalgia out there for the OG McDonaldland characters. This campaign taps into that love and includes an exciting meal that groups of friends can enjoy together this summer. Plus, it includes a bonus bucket hat – what’s not to love?”.

DDB Sydney Chief Creative Officer, Matt Chandler further added: “We had a lot of fun making this, with a pretty awesome squad of people who brought it all to life. And who knew Grimace could hoop?!”.

The campaign is set to the iconic Run DMC track ‘It’s Like That’ and will run until February 11, alongside the ‘Macca’s run?’ summer phase two campaign.
